I received my B.A. and M.A. from Baiko Gakuin University, Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan, majoring in English and American literature. I received my Ph.D. from Indiana University in 2017, majoring in African American & African Diaspora Studies and minoring in Ethnomusicology. My dissertation is entitled The Adoption and Adaptation of Gospel Music in Japan: Perspectives on Performance, and it explores the different ways of adopting and adapting gospel music among Japanese people that resulted from different perspectives on gospel music, transmitted from the leading directors and performers in the Japanese gospel music community.

Before joining the Emory Japanese program, I taught Japanese language as an associate instructor in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures at Indiana University from 2009 to 2017.
